Southern Iraq Discovery
Go deeper. After Baghdad, Babylon, and the holy cities, continue south to the Mesopotamian Marshes — a surreal waterworld in the desert — and the 4,000-year-old Ziggurat of Ur.
Southern Iraq is where civilisation began. The Sumerians built the first cities here. Abraham is believed to have been born at Ur. The Marsh Arabs have lived in reed houses on the water for 5,000 years. And almost no tourists come.
This seven-day tour takes you through everything in the Baghdad & Babylon tour, then keeps going south into the landscapes and communities that most visitors to Iraq never see. The Mesopotamian Marshes alone — a UNESCO World Heritage Site where people still live and travel by boat — is worth the entire trip.
If you only want Baghdad and Babylon, the 5-day tour covers that. If you want everything — south plus Mosul, Hatra, and Kurdistan — the Complete Iraq Tour is the one. Read more about me and how I guide.
This is the tour I recommend to anyone who wants more than the highlights. It’s where Iraq really surprises you.

Mesopotamian Marshes
The highlight of the south — and for many guests, the highlight of the entire trip. We drive one hour from Nasiriyah to the marshes at Chibayish, then spend a full day on the water. A UNESCO World Heritage Site where people still live and travel by boat through endless reed-lined waterways. We eat masgouf cooked fresh on the water and visit the Marsh Arab communities in their traditional reed houses.

Return to Baghdad
The long drive back north to Baghdad — about 5 hours depending on traffic. We take it easy with stops along the way, and you’ll have the evening free at the guesthouse to rest and pack. It’s a travel day, but the landscapes are part of the experience — flat desert giving way to date palm groves as we approach Baghdad.
What we’ll see
- Morning at the marshes or Nasiriyah (depending on pace)
- Long drive back to Baghdad (5+ hours, stops along the way)
- Evening at the guesthouse — rest, pack, final riverside dinner

WHAT GUESTS SAY
From Real Travellers
“The marshes were the most surreal place I’ve ever been. Floating through reed waterways, eating fresh fish cooked on the boat, meeting families who’ve lived this way for thousands of years. Ali made the whole week feel effortless — even the long drives were enjoyable.”
“Seven days was the perfect length. Baghdad and Babylon were incredible, but the south is where Iraq really blew my mind. Standing at the Ziggurat of Ur completely alone, then the marshes the next day — nothing else compares.”

About This Tour
What are the Mesopotamian Marshes like?
Imagine a vast waterworld in the middle of the Iraqi desert — endless reed-lined waterways, floating islands, and communities who have lived on the water for 5,000 years. You travel by traditional wooden boat, visit reed houses, and eat freshly caught fish. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most unique ecosystems on earth.
Is southern Iraq safe for tourists?
Yes. Southern Iraq has been stable for years. The holy cities receive millions of domestic pilgrims annually, and the marsh communities are some of the most hospitable people you’ll meet anywhere. I’ve guided hundreds of visitors without a single incident. You’ll be with me at all times. Read more in my guide to safety in Iraq.
Do I need a visa for Iraq?
Most nationalities need an eVisa, which costs around $160 and takes a few days to process. I help every guest with the application — I’ll tell you exactly what documents to prepare and review everything before you submit. Check my Iraq visa guide for full details.
How much driving is there?
This tour has more driving than the shorter ones. The longest stretches are Najaf to Nasiriyah (about 3 hours) and the return from the marshes to Baghdad (5+ hours). Baghdad to Babylon is 1.5 hours, and Babylon to Karbala is just 40 minutes. All drives are in a comfortable private vehicle with regular stops. Traffic in Baghdad can be horrendous at times, so we plan around it. The southern landscapes — flat desert, date palm groves, river valleys — are part of the experience.
When is the best time to visit?
October through April. The marshes are best in the cooler months when the water levels are good and the heat is manageable. Avoid June–September unless you enjoy 45°C+ heat — the south gets even hotter than Baghdad. Read more in my best time to visit Iraq guide.
Can I add Kurdistan to this tour?
Absolutely — that becomes the Complete Iraq Tour (10–12 days). After the southern leg, we head north through Samarra, Mosul, and Hatra before ending in Kurdistan. Or if you only want the south without Baghdad, I can build something custom — just ask.
What if I only have 5 days?
The Baghdad & Babylon tour (5 days, from $650) covers Baghdad, Babylon, Karbala, and Najaf — essentially Days 1–4 of this itinerary. If you only want Baghdad, the Baghdad Explorer (3 days) is a great introduction.
