PRIVATE TOURS WITH A LOCAL GUIDE
Iraq Tours with a Local Guide
Private tours across Baghdad, Babylon, the holy cities, and beyond — led by a local Iraqi guide who knows every corner, every shortcut, and every door that’s supposed to be closed.
Iraq is the cradle of civilisation. Babylon, Ur, the Mesopotamian Marshes, the holy cities of Karbala and Najaf — these aren’t just names from history books. They’re real places you can walk through today, and most of them see barely a handful of visitors each week. Every iraq tour I run is private — just you and me, no groups, no fixed departures.
I’m Ali — a local iraq tour operator born and raised in Iraq. I don’t run tours from an office in London or Dubai — I live here, I know the people, and I know how to show you a side of this country that no international tour operator can. When a palace is officially closed, I find a way in. When there’s a better route through a checkpoint, I know it. When a local family is cooking masgouf by the river, we’re stopping.
No large groups, no rigid schedules — just you, me, and the real Iraq. If you’re looking for the best iraq tours with a local guide, you’re in the right place.

Baghdad and Babylon
The essential Iraq experience. Start in Baghdad, then head south to walk through the ancient ruins of Babylon — one of the most significant archaeological sites on earth. Continue to the holy cities of Karbala and Najaf before returning to the capital. I know Babylon like the back of my hand, and I have a habit of getting us into places that are supposed to be off-limits.

- Borsippa ziggurat (believed to be the original Tower of Babel)
- Imam Hussein Shrine, Karbala
- Imam Ali Shrine and Wadi al-Salam cemetery, Najaf
- Traditional Iraqi meals along the way
Southern Iraq Discovery
Go deeper into the south. After Baghdad, Babylon, and the holy cities, continue to the Mesopotamian Marshes — a surreal waterworld in the middle of the desert where people still live in reed houses and travel by boat. Then visit the 4,000-year-old Ziggurat of Ur, believed to be the birthplace of Abraham.
Highlights
- Everything in the Baghdad and Babylon tour
- Mesopotamian Marshes boat tour and overnight with local families
- Traditional Marsh Arab reed houses
- Ziggurat of Ur
- Nasiriyah
- Al-Ukhaidir Fortress
- Fresh masgouf fish lunch in the marshes

Most Iraq tour companies are run from Europe or Dubai and charge $250-370 per day. I’m based here — no middlemen, no foreign overheads, no commission-taking booking platforms. You pay me directly, and in Baghdad you stay at my own guesthouse instead of a $120/night hotel. The savings go straight to you.
WHY TRAVEL WITH ME
This Isn’t a Tour Company.
It’s a Local Friend.
I’m Iraqi — This Is My Home
Most Iraq tour companies are run from Europe or Dubai. I was born here, I live here, and this is my country. That means real local connections, insider access, and a perspective no foreign operator can offer.
I Get You Into Places Others Can’t
Saddam’s pool palace that’s officially closed? I’ll get us in. A restricted area at Babylon? I know someone. A local family’s home for a meal you won’t find in any restaurant? Already arranged.
Your Tour, Your Pace
No 30-person buses. No rigid schedule. If you want to spend an extra hour wandering Babylon or stop at a roadside spot for the best kubba in Iraq, we do it. Every tour is flexible because it’s just us.
Smooth Logistics in a Complex Country
Iraq has checkpoints, visa requirements, and logistics that can overwhelm independent travellers. I handle all of it — checkpoint coordination, accommodation, transport, and eVisa documentation — so you can focus on the experience.
Ali’s Guesthouse in Baghdad
In Baghdad, you don’t stay in a generic hotel. You stay at my traditional Iraqi guesthouse — a rustic, authentic house right on the Tigris river, overlooking the Green Zone. Wake up to a view of the river crossing Baghdad, have breakfast on the terrace, and feel what it’s actually like to live here. It’s the kind of place you can’t book on any website.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Before You Book
Is Iraq safe to visit?
Yes — for the regions I take visitors to. Baghdad, the south, and Kurdistan have been stable for years and are welcoming to tourists. I know the security landscape better than any travel advisory written from abroad. I’ve guided hundreds of visitors without a single incident. Read my full take on safety in Iraq
Do I need a visa?
Yes. Since March 2025, most nationalities need an eVisa (~$160), applied for online before arrival. I provide all supporting documentation as part of every tour — you just fill in the form. Read the complete Iraq visa guide
When is the best time to visit?
October through April is ideal. Winter months (December-February) are actually fantastic — mild temperatures, clear skies, and hardly any other tourists. Avoid June-September unless you enjoy 45C+ heat. Read the month-by-month guide
Can I travel solo?
Absolutely. Many of my guests are solo travellers. Since every tour is private, you get a personal guide without needing to wait for a group departure date. Solo traveller rates are slightly higher than the per-person price for two, but you get the exact same experience.
What about women travellers?
Women are welcome and safe on my tours. Modest dress is needed at religious sites (I’ll advise you exactly what’s required). I regularly guide solo female travellers and they consistently say they felt safe and welcomed throughout.
What’s the accommodation like?
In Baghdad, you stay at my guesthouse — a traditional Iraqi house on the Tigris with a view of the Green Zone. It’s rustic and authentic, not a polished hotel, and guests love it. Outside Baghdad, I book clean, comfortable hotels (3-4 star) with breakfast.
Why are your prices lower than other operators?
Because I’m based here, not in Europe or Dubai. No middlemen, no overseas office overheads, no commission-taking booking platforms. You pay me directly, and in Baghdad you stay at my own guesthouse instead of a $120/night hotel. The savings go straight to you — and the money stays local.
How do I book?
Get in touch via the contact form or WhatsApp. I’ll ask about your dates and interests, then build you a custom itinerary. No commitment until you’re happy with the plan. A deposit via bank transfer secures your dates, with the balance in cash (USD) when you arrive.
