Private Tours in Iraq With a Local Guide

I’m Ali, a Baghdad-based guide. I’ll build your Iraq trip around your interests, your pace, and your dates — whether it’s a day trip to Babylon or 12 days across the whole country.

Local Iraqi Guide Based in Baghdad Private Tours Only 24/7 Support

Most Iraq tour operators sell you a fixed package and hand you off to a guide you’ve never spoken to. I do the opposite. I’m Ali — I was born in Iraq, I live in Baghdad, and I personally guide every tour myself. When you message me at midnight with a question about your trip, I’m the one who answers.

Every private tour I run is built around you — your interests, your pace, your dates. Want a day trip from Baghdad to Babylon and back? Done. Three days in the capital to test the waters? Easy. Ten days across the whole country, from the Mesopotamian Marshes to the Kurdish mountains? I’ll map it out. Interested in archaeology, Islamic history, photography, food, or just the raw experience of travelling somewhere almost no one goes? Tell me, and I’ll build your tailor-made Iraq itinerary from scratch.

I offer example itineraries from 1 to 12 days, but every single one can be adjusted. Solo travellers, couples, families, small groups — everyone is welcome. Read more about me and how I guide, or check my guide on whether Iraq is safe to visit.

No rigid itineraries, no 30-person buses, no middlemen. Just you, me, and the real Iraq.

WHAT GUESTS SAY

From Real Travellers

“I asked Ali for a custom itinerary and within a day I had a detailed plan that was better than anything I’d seen from the big tour companies. He adjusted it twice for me without any fuss. The whole trip — Babylon, the marshes, everything — felt personal in a way that no agency tour could.”

★★★★★ — Thomas K., Germany

“We had 8 days and wanted to see as much as possible. Ali put together an itinerary that covered Baghdad, Babylon, the holy cities, and Kurdistan — and still had time for a rest day. His guesthouse on the Tigris was the highlight. This isn’t a tour — it’s travelling with a friend who happens to know everything.”

WHY TRAVEL WITH ALI

Not a Tour Agency.
A Local Guide Who Builds Your Trip Personally.

Local, Not an Agency

I’m not a dispatch office. I personally guide every tour myself. When you book with me, you get me — from the first WhatsApp message to your airport goodbye. No handoffs, no subcontracted guides, no surprises.

Flexible & Custom

Your trip, your pace. Want an extra day for photography in the marshes? Skip the holy cities and add Kurdistan instead? Need a rest day after the long southern drive? I’ll adjust the itinerary to fit you, not the other way around.

Best Value in Iraq

Many Iraq tour operators — even the local ones — charge $250-370 per day because they add heavy markups, commissions, and unnecessary overhead. I keep it simple: no middlemen, no inflated prices. You pay me directly, and in Baghdad you stay at my guesthouse instead of a $120/night hotel. Fair prices for the same experience.

Smooth Logistics in a Complex Country

Iraq has checkpoints, visa requirements, and logistics that can overwhelm independent travellers. I handle all of it — checkpoint coordination, accommodation, transport, visa documentation — so you can focus entirely on the experience.

Ali’s Guesthouse on the Tigris

In Baghdad, you don’t stay in a generic hotel. You stay at my traditional Iraqi guesthouse — a rustic house right on the river, overlooking the Green Zone. Wake up to a view of the Tigris, have breakfast on the terrace, and feel what it’s actually like to live here. It’s the kind of place you can’t book on any website.

Why are these prices lower than other operators?

Many Iraq tour operators — even local ones — charge $250-370 per day with heavy markups and commissions. I don’t do that. No middlemen, no inflated prices, no commission-taking booking platforms. You pay me directly, and in Baghdad you stay at my own guesthouse instead of a $120/night hotel. Simple, fair, and transparent.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before You Book

Is Iraq safe to visit?

Yes — for the regions I take visitors to. Baghdad, the south, and Kurdistan have been stable for years and are welcoming to tourists. Tourism has grown significantly since 2017, and in 2021 Pope Francis visited Ur, Baghdad, Erbil, and Mosul. I know the security landscape better than any travel advisory written from abroad, and I’ve guided over 200 visitors without a single incident. Read my full guide to safety in Iraq.

Do I need a visa to visit Iraq?

For federal Iraq (Baghdad, Babylon, the south): yes, most nationalities need an eVisa (~$160), applied for online before arrival. I provide all supporting documentation as part of every tour. For Kurdistan only: most Western nationalities can get a visa on arrival at Erbil airport or apply for an e-visa online — much simpler. I’ll confirm the exact requirements for your nationality and help you through the process. Read the complete Iraq visa guide.

When is the best time to visit Iraq?

October through April is ideal for southern and central Iraq — mild temperatures, clear skies, and hardly any other tourists. Winter months (December–February) are the sweet spot. Kurdistan is best in spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) when the mountains are green. Avoid June–September for the south unless you enjoy 45°C+ heat. Read the month-by-month guide.

How much does a private tour of Iraq cost?

My tours range from $120 per person for a day trip (such as Baghdad to Babylon) to $1,400 per person for the 10-12 day Complete Iraq, based on 2 travellers. Solo travellers pay a supplement; groups of 3+ get a discount. My prices are lower than most operators because I keep things simple — no heavy markups, no commissions, no inflated overhead. The exact price depends on your duration, group size, and any custom requests.

Can I fully customise my itinerary?

Absolutely — that’s the whole point. Every tour I run is tailored to you. Change the duration, add or remove destinations, adjust the pace, focus on specific interests (archaeology, food, photography, religion). My example itineraries are starting points — I build the final plan around your dates, budget, and what excites you most.

Can I visit Kurdistan and federal Iraq in one trip?

Yes — that’s the Complete Iraq Tour (10-12 days). You arrive in Baghdad, travel south through Babylon and the marshes, then head north through Samarra, Mosul, and into Kurdistan. You fly out of Erbil — no backtracking. One Iraq eVisa covers both regions. I handle all the paperwork and the border crossing between federal Iraq and Kurdistan.

Where will I stay?

In Baghdad, you stay at my guesthouse — a traditional Iraqi house on the Tigris with a terrace view of the Green Zone. It’s rustic and authentic, not a polished hotel, and guests love it. If you prefer a hotel, I can arrange that instead. Outside Baghdad, I book clean, comfortable hotels (3-4 star) with breakfast. In the marshes, there’s an option to stay overnight with local families.

Is Iraq suitable for solo female travellers?

Yes. I regularly guide solo female travellers and they consistently say they felt safe and welcomed throughout. Modest dress is needed at religious sites — I’ll advise you exactly what’s required before you arrive. Kurdistan is more relaxed in terms of dress codes. Many of my guests are solo travellers, both men and women, and since every tour is private, you get the exact same experience regardless of group size.

How do I book?

Get in touch via the contact form or WhatsApp. I’ll ask about your dates, interests, and group size, then send you a custom itinerary with pricing within 24 hours. No commitment until you’re happy with the plan. A deposit via bank transfer secures your dates, with the balance in cash (USD) when you arrive.
