Baghdad Explorer

The best introduction to Iraq’s capital — its ancient treasures, chaotic markets, legendary cafes, and the stories that never made the news. You stay at my guesthouse on the Tigris.

Local Iraqi Guide Based in Baghdad Private Tours Only 24/7 Support

Baghdad isn’t what you expect — and this baghdad tour is built around showing you exactly that. The city that was once the centre of the Islamic Golden Age is messy, loud, warm, and absolutely full of surprises. In three days, I’ll take you through the highlights — not the sanitised version, but the real one.

We’ll explore 5,000 years of history at the National Museum, drink tea and smoke shisha at Shahbandar cafe, walk through book markets and copper bazaars, and drive out to the world’s largest unreinforced brick arch at Ctesiphon. In between, you’ll eat masgouf — Iraq’s legendary grilled fish — and some of the best street food you’ve never heard of.

This is my most popular tour — perfect if you’ve got limited time or want to test the waters before adding Babylon or heading further south. It also works perfectly as a standalone baghdad day tour if your time is tight. Read more about me and how I guide.

In Baghdad, you have the option to stay at my guesthouse — a traditional Iraqi house right on the Tigris, overlooking the Green Zone. It’s rustic, authentic, and the kind of place you can’t book on any website.

DAY BY DAY

Your Baghdad Example Itinerary

This is a guide, not a script. We adapt every day based on your energy, interests, and what’s happening in the city.

Day 1

Arrival, Ctesiphon & Old Baghdad

I pick you up at Baghdad International Airport and we head straight to the Arch of Ctesiphon — it’s right on the route into the city, just a 30-minute detour south. After that, we continue to my guesthouse on the Tigris where you check in and have lunch on the terrace. In the afternoon, we walk through the heart of old Baghdad.

What we’ll see

  1. Airport pickup and drive south (30 min) to Ctesiphon
  2. Ctesiphon Arch (Taq Kasra) — a 30-minute drive from Baghdad, the world’s largest single-span brick vault, built 1,500 years ago
  3. Check in at Ali’s riverside guesthouse, lunch on the Tigris terrace
  4. Al-Mutanabbi Street — Baghdad’s legendary book market, buzzing since the 10th century
  5. Shahbandar cafe — tea and shisha in a cafe that has survived every war since 1917
  6. Copper bazaar, leather market, and riverside dinner
Day 2

Museums, Monuments & Kadhimiya

The big day. We start early at the National Museum — one of the most important archaeological collections on earth — then cover Baghdad’s modern landmarks and iconic streets. We’ll stop for masgouf, Iraq’s legendary grilled fish, for lunch. In the afternoon, we drive north (20 min) to Al-Kadhimiya for its stunning golden-domed mosque.

What we’ll see

  1. National Museum of Iraq — Sumerian, Babylonian, and Assyrian treasures (may be closed for renovation)
  2. Martyr’s Monument (Al-Shaheed) — the iconic turquoise split dome memorial
  3. Tahrir Square and the Freedom Monument by Jawad Selim
  4. Masgouf lunch — Iraq’s legendary slow-grilled carp, served riverside
  5. Al-Kadhimiya Mosque — golden-domed Shia shrine (20-min drive north)
  6. Kadhimiya neighbourhood walk and evening at leisure
Day 3

Deeper Baghdad & Departure

Your last morning is for the pieces that make Baghdad feel layered rather than rushed. We visit two landmarks from the Abbasid Golden Age, take a riverside walk, and end with a final Iraqi breakfast before your airport transfer.

What we’ll see

  1. Abbasid Palace — a rare surviving fragment of medieval Baghdad
  2. Al-Mustansiriya School — one of the oldest universities in the world (1227 AD)
  3. Riverside walk along Abu Nuwas Street
  4. Baghdad’s street art and modern murals scene
  5. Final Iraqi breakfast at the guesthouse
  6. Airport transfer (45-min drive)

“Ali made our Baghdad trip unforgettable. His guesthouse on the Tigris was the highlight — waking up to that view with Iraqi breakfast on the terrace was something special. He knows every corner of the city and made us feel completely safe the entire time.”

★★★★★ — Mohammed A., Dubai, UAE

“I was nervous about visiting Iraq but Ali put me at ease from the moment he picked me up at the airport. The Ctesiphon Arch blew my mind, and the masgouf by the river was the best meal of the whole trip. Highly recommend for anyone curious about Baghdad.”

WHY TRAVEL WITH ALI

Not a Tour Company. A Local Who Knows Every Corner.

You Stay at My Home

My guesthouse sits right on the Tigris. You eat breakfast on the terrace, sleep in a traditional Iraqi house, and get the insider experience no hotel can match.

I’m Your Guide the Entire Time

I drive, translate, explain, and open doors that agencies can’t. I’ve been doing this for years and I know every checkpoint, every shortcut, every best-kept-secret restaurant.

Flexible, Not Scripted

The itinerary is a starting point. Tired after the museum? We skip the afternoon and go for masgouf by the river instead. Want to spend an extra hour in the bazaar? Done. Your trip, your pace.

Smooth Logistics in a Complex Country

Iraq has checkpoints, visa requirements, and logistics that can overwhelm independent travellers. I handle all of it — so you can focus on the experience.

COMMON QUESTIONS

About This Tour

Is Baghdad safe for tourists?

Yes. Baghdad has been stable for years and is welcoming to tourists. I live here and I know the city inside out. I’ve guided hundreds of visitors without a single incident. You’ll be with me at all times, and I handle all logistics including checkpoint coordination. Read more in my guide to safety in Iraq.

What’s the guesthouse like?

My guesthouse is a traditional Iraqi house right on the Tigris river, overlooking the Green Zone. It’s rustic and authentic — not a polished hotel — with a terrace where you eat breakfast watching the river. If you prefer a hotel, I can arrange that instead.

Do I need a visa for Iraq?

Most nationalities need an eVisa, which costs around $160 and takes a few days to process. I help every guest with the application — I’ll tell you exactly what documents to prepare and review everything before you submit. Check my Iraq visa guide for full details.

Can I extend this tour?

Absolutely. Many guests add Babylon, the holy cities, or the southern marshes. The Baghdad & Babylon tour (5 days, from $650) is the most popular extension, or go all the way with the Southern Iraq Discovery (7 days). I can also build something custom — just ask.

When is the best time to visit Baghdad?

October through April. Winter months (December–February) are ideal — mild temperatures, clear skies, hardly any tourists. Avoid June–September unless you enjoy 45°C+ heat. For more detail, see my best time to visit Iraq guide.
